pfSense CE 2.8.1 Release — Maintenance Update and Bug Fixes
In this update, we’re looking at the latest release of pfSense Community Edition, version 2.8.1.
This new version has just been released and is primarily a maintenance update focused on stability and bug fixes.
The goal of this release is to polish the experience by resolving issues discovered since the initial 2.8 release.
Netgate encourages all pfSense CE users to upgrade to 2.8.1 to benefit from these improvements.
What’s New and Improved
Version 2.8.1 brings a series of minor enhancements under the hood along with numerous fixes across different components.
Here’s a quick rundown of the key changes:
🖥️ New Hardware Support
-
Added support for 2.5 Gb SGMII (SFP and ONT) modules, improving compatibility with certain 2.5 Gb fibre and copper interfaces.
💾 ZFS Enhancements
-
You can now assign custom ZFS pool names, offering more flexibility in managing storage.
-
Disk write operations have been reduced, helping to minimise wear on drives and improve performance.
General Stability and Bug Fixes
This update includes a wide range of bug fixes across core services and networking components, including:
-
Dynamic DNS
-
PPPoE interfaces
-
OpenVPN
-
Firewall and NAT rules
-
System logging
-
UPnP services
Although 2.8.1 doesn’t introduce major new features, it addresses many bugs to enhance reliability and security.
🧰 Specific Fixes
-
Auto Configuration Backup – Corrected an issue where backup entries displayed the wrong timestamps.
-
PPPoE Improvements – Fixed configuration loops and ensured IPv6 gateways now display correctly, even without router advertisements.
-
OpenVPN Stability – Resolved a rare kernel panic caused by a “use-after-free” error in the OpenVPN interface driver, improving VPN reliability.
-
Firewall and NAT – Rules using interface addresses (e.g. NAT64 source) now correctly apply to the intended address.
-
System Logging – Fixed an issue where
syslogdignored its configured interface IP binding. Logs now properly use the selected interface. -
UPnP Service – The status page now correctly displays a “disabled” message when the UPnP PCP service is turned off.
All of these contribute to a more stable and secure pfSense experience.
