How to upgrade FreeNAS to TrueNAS

By Sam Sheridan - 1st November, 2020

FreeNAS the popular open source Network Attached Storage (NAS) system from iXsystems has now merged in to TrueNAS to become TrueNAS CORE.

Now the official release of TrueNAS CORE is available, this video walks through a live migration from FreeNAS to TrueNAS CORE in a production environment.

While the upgrade from FreeNAS to TrueNAS went fairly painlessly, there was an issue when upgrading one of the jails (syncthing) which totally broke the jail but was also fairly simple to resolve.

For anyone who hasn't yet made the transition from FreeNAS 11.3-U5 to TrueNAS CORE 12.0 I hope this video is useful.
