How to Stop PDF Files Opening in Microsoft Edge

Published 11 September 2026

Windows may open PDF files in Microsoft Edge instead of Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Reader or another PDF application.

You can change the default application used for PDF files.

Right-click any PDF file and select:

Open with > Choose another app

Select the application you want to use, such as:

Adobe Acrobat

or:

Adobe Acrobat Reader

Select the option to always use that application for PDF files, then click OK.

PDF files should now open in your chosen application instead of Microsoft Edge.

Using Windows Settings

You can also change the default application through Windows Settings.

Open:

Settings > Apps > Default apps

Search for:

.pdf

Select the current application, then choose the PDF application you want to use.

This changes the default application for all PDF files.
